INTRODUCTION

  1. The Government of Karnataka views the Targeted Public Distribution System as an important constituent of the strategy for food security by ensuring minimum supplies of food grains to the population under Below Poverty Line( BPL) The state government is implementing the Targeted Public Distribution system to the best advantage of the beneficiaries with utmost transparency and efficiency.
  2. The Targeted public system functions through a network of Fair Price Depots.  Households belonging to vulnerable sections of the society and living below the poverty line in the rural areas (income below Rs.12,000-00 per annum) and in urban areas (income below Rs.17,000-00 per annum) will be normally treated as BPL families.  These families are entitled to get food grains as subsidized prices.

IDENTIFICATION OF BPL FAMILIES

It is the endeavor of the Government of Karnataka to identify genuine BPL families both in the rural areas and in urban areas and provide them food grains at subsidized prices under the Targeted Public Distribution System.  Transparent procedure specific economic criteria would form the basic for identification of genuine BPL Families. 

FAIR PRICE DEPOTS

The Targeted Public Distribution functions through a network of Fair Price Depts.  The Government of Karnataka has enacted the Karnataka Essential Commodities (Public Distribution System) Control Order, 1992 to issue authorization to KFCSC, Sthreeshakthi, Registered Associations and individuals to run fair price depots and to regulate the functioning of these fair price depots.  These fair price depots which form the core of the Public Distribution System and entrusted with the responsibility of distributing food grains to the ration card holders attached to the respective fair price depots.  It is the Endeavour of the Government of Karnataka to locate these fair price depots keeping in view the convenience and interest to the ration card holders. Transparent procedure as prescribed under the Karnataka Essential Commodities (Public Distribution System) control order 1992 would be followed for issue of authorization to run fair price depots.
